Anthony Carroll, the son of a mill owner from Doneraile in North Cork was born in 1865. He qualified as a solicitor in 1888 and was awarded the gold medal for taking first place in the Law Society’s Final Examination. In 1890 he established the firm which later became Anthony Carroll & Co.

He was revered as an exceptional legal mind and handled some of the most important litigation in Ireland at that time. His status as one of Ireland’s most respected lawyers, is reflected by his appointment as legal advisor to the Irish Land Commission and also as State Solicitor for the East Riding of County Cork from 1905 – 1922.

Anthony Carroll continued to practice until his untimely death in 1933 when the firm was taken over by his sons Edmund Carroll and Leonard Carroll. Edmund Carroll also had a reputation as a distinguished lawyer and three of his children later followed him into practice at the firm.

The firm was greatly expanded by Edmund’s son, Brian Carroll, Professor of law at UCC and one of Ireland’s leading tax and commercial lawyers of his era. Brian, like his father and grandfather, also shared the unique distinction of taking first place in the Law Society’s Final Examination.

Current practitioners, Valerie Carroll and Justin McCarthy are grandchildren of Anthony Carroll, whilst our latest partner, Ian McCarthy is the fourth generation of this legal family to continue the proud tradition of law within the firm.
